Happiness in the Workplace

In our Youtube/Playlist project, we were required to find videos that potential job seekers and college students could refer to for inspiration, education, and personal benefit. In the process of doing this project, I came across a TedTalk given by speaker Kerri Twigg entitled “Burn Your Old Resume, the Future of Work Is Here”. In this TedTalk, Kerri talks about how a resume is not entirely useless. However, it it is in a way useless to people in which it only tells half of our stories. Otherwise explained, we are not able to fully express ourselves in terms of our personalities. Resumes are only required to tell the more serious aspects of one’s life with describing skills and work experiences. These descriptions are judged by potential employees in which they tend to look for proper use of diction in resumes. However, we are also told that employers spend less than two minutes reviewing a jobseekers resume. So what exactly is the point in submitting one at all? Twigg responds to this by saying that we should burn or throw our resume in the trash. She would prefer that people take the time to discover their interests which will determine the type of work they would like to do when they are searching for another job. People should find work that they enjoy instead of work that is too demanding and stressful just because it pays well.

As I mentioned in our most recent discussion, these following chapter of the book were really inclusive of the many concepts discussed in the beginning chapter. That idea of finding a balance between work and life as very important to incorporate in all aspects of your life. We have all expressed how important it is to be sure to find happiness in ourselves and in the work that we do. We should not have to conform ourselves to society’s expectations and standards for ‘work etiquette’.

This discussion also greatly relates to our recent TedTalk video about how to find your dream job. Everyone has been asked a young what we want to be when we grow up. Our responses were never really taken seriously but will eventually when we are older because that is what counts the most. As mentioned earlier, our dream job/career should be based on our personal interests. If we wish to have a professional career, we are required to go to college turn about different skills and tactic the job/career requires. Our interests in college are seen through the majors and minors we choose from. As we come to know and understand where we want to be in our future, we will make the effort to do what is necessary to get to that point. We should also make sure that we are satisfied throughtout this process.
